If Scotland gained independence, homelessness wouldn’t vanish — but the excuses might. The Scottish Government would hold full responsibility for housing policy, funding, and outcomes. No more blaming Westminster.
1. Full Control, Full Accountability
- Independence means Scotland controls housing budgets, welfare systems, and legal protections.
- No more deflecting to UK-wide policy failures — every decision would be made in Holyrood.
2. The Current Picture Is Already Grim
- Over 30% of councils have declared housing emergencies.
- Temporary accommodation use is rising, especially for women and children.
- Mixed-sex hostels and shabby hotels remain the norm — even for vulnerable women.
3. Missed Opportunities
- Scotland already has progressive homelessness laws — but they’re not enforced.
- Councils routinely fail to meet statutory duties, especially for families.
- Independence won’t fix this unless political will and funding priorities shift.
4. What Could Change — If We Demand It
- A national housing strategy rooted in dignity, safety, and prevention.
- Same-sex accommodation for women as standard.
- Real investment in social housing, not just promises.
Independence won’t solve homelessness. But it removes the last excuse.
If Scotland wants to be sovereign, it must also be accountable — especially to those with no roof, no lock, and no safety.
