ANGELS OF CHANGE

HOME ADVANTAGE

(52 Week Residential and out in the Community initiative, income earning )

Growing up and living in an unequal society affects people’s

assumptions about human nature. It predisposes people to be more or less affiliative, empathetic or aggressive.

Most people know that there are few things nicer than relaxing

with friends and equals. They also know that it is family, friends

and community that matter to happiness and know that our present

way of life is ruining the planet.

FRIENDSHIP is about reciprocity, mutuality, sharing, social

obligations, cooperation and recognition of each other’s needs.

KNOWLEDGE AND NEIGHBOURLY RELATIONSHIPS must not be superficial, must not be non-existent; there is strength in people’s real knowledge of each other, familiar faces…trust…

We use expressions like:-

  • Injustice hides behind a mask of mass societal anonymity
  • Inequality is a social divider
  • Transformation not procrastination
  • Community and equality are mutually reinforcing
  • Building up of settled communities not break up
  • Rebirth not break up
  • Home, built on sustainable foundations

Sadly for several decades’ political will has remained jaundiced.

Adults experiencing homelessness are often silenced in their communities, but we believe in the power and potential of each person that walks through our doors.

We refuse to hold sway with the condescending belief that homeless people choose to be homeless, or poor people need to be taught to be more sensible.

We can all take comfort in the knowledge that the strength of the

evidence, that a more equal society is a better society, has a key role

to play in changing public opinion; and it starts with the belief we

all have the means of making a difference.

Piecemeal improvements in different areas of life fall far short of the mark.

We refrain from 'reinventing the wheel'.

Many of the tools, resources and institutions to create the needed social change already exist; accordingly we foster strong partnerships with other stakeholders including local nonprofits, small businesses and government.

Our aim is to create a groundswell of opinion and action in favour of change that we all have a shared interest in.

Accordingly from the 1st April 2024 we will launch our 'Angels of Change Home Advantage' program.

FUTURES

Great Expectations

(Education, Learning, Research, Publishing, Advocacy, Signposting, Safeguarding)

Education is the fire that nobody can put out.

Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget: "The principle goal of education is to create humans who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done—humans who are creative, inventive, and discoverers."

This gets to the heart of fostering innovation and creativity within homeless adults and adults at risk of becoming homeless, who have enrolled as learners at the Doors Academy.

If you are encouraged to be a more authentic learner and thinker, you can harness your  own potential and determine what you  believe a well-rounded human being should be.

Modules - tailored via person centred approach

Life is a classroom, we are both student and teacher.

Life Skills necessary or desirable for full participation in everyday life.

Social skills the tools that enable you to communicate, learn, ask for help, get needs met in appropriate ways, get along with others, make friends, develop healthy relationships, protect yourself, protect others, and in general, be able to interact with society harmoniously.

Basic Communication Skills include the ability to listen, follow directions and refrain from speaking.

Empathy and Rapport Skills - Empathy is the ability to put oneself in someone else's shoes and feel what they feel. Rapport is the connection and harmony you establish with another person through communication and behavior.

Interpersonal Skills the ability to communicate or interact well with other people.

Problem Solving Skills the process of achieving a goal by overcoming obstacles

Accountability Skills increases willingness to take responsibility, and fosters a sense of respect and trust.

Workplace skills: The personal skills that ensure you do your job well, such as being adept at teamwork, time management, or solving problems.

Your learning, being based on a consensual understanding as the programme is personalised, contextualised and customised, forms an agreed plan of action.

Let's Face it

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced"

James Baldwin

So what is it that you desire to do with your life? why not write it down, make a plan, prepare your 'map for life'. Perhaps you have done all of this already and just need a helping hand with present circumstances. Either way our hand of friendship is extended always, all ways.

We live in a disposable, 'cast-off and throw-away' society that has largely lost any real sense of permanence. A society where laws and policies abound, societal expectations are ever demanding and yet majorly an

obscene acceptance of  the horrors of homelessness exist.

Society flush with educational programs for the housed but majorly absent, fragmented and/or  consisting of a tortuous route into education for the homeless.

The right to education is a fundamental right to which everyone is entitled.

If those in power violate any of our rights – or fail to protect them then in theory the Human Rights Act lets us seek justice in court; and yet homelessness is rampant and pervasive while political and societal will is feeble and bankrupt.

SHINE YOUR EYE

“wake up, look at what's really happening.”

“In the vacuum created by fear and

ignorance and hunger and want, it's evil, not good, that rushes to fill the void.”

Glenn Beck, The Overton Window

On average a roofless person dies a quarter of a century earlier than the housed.

The Overton Window is a model for understanding how ideas in society change over time and influence politics.

The core concept is that politicians are limited in what policy ideas they can support — they generally only pursue policies that are widely accepted throughout society as legitimate policy options. These policies lie inside the Overton Window and will attract action.

Contrary to public opinion it’s us the people who ultimately

determine the types of policies politicians will get behind.

Thus it follows that our social institutions - families, friends

churches, schools, workplaces, voluntary associations,   charities, media, think tanks, and many other phenomena that establish and reinforce societal norms — are more important to shaping our politics than they or we typically credit them for.

For that reason we posit with conviction that the elimination of homelessness must be placed and remain at the cutting edge of societal and political policy on health, welfare, and housing; ensuring housing for all when needed, as an entrenched right, sacrosanct in perpetuity. Safely inside the overton window.

For as long as historical records have been kept, our island has had a homelessness problem. In fact vagrancy laws can be traced back to the 7th century. This must change.

Shame on us all if we allow our future descendants to suffer due to our lack of positive transformative action.
